34. Perfect Execution _ Marcus Watts

Updated: Nov 10, 2021

Today Lindsey and I sit down with Marcus Watts and discuss how grit, personal ownership, and intentionality are critical to perfect execution. We also discuss the necessity to seek to gain understanding, before seeking to be understood and the power that comes from being a problem solver instead of a victim. Hold on to your seats, as this conversation is a blast. Highlights include: -The goal is to over deliver. -Growing yourself as a person is nonnegotiable. -Intentional conversations are a choice. -Differences matter, personal ownership, and conversation on being Black or Brown in America. -Perfect Execution. -Don’t let someone else’s emotion move you. -Confidence is earned through well-honed competence. -People want to talk to be heard, instead be a problem solver. -To know and not act is to not care. Jon

Hello, everyone, welcome to The Grit Theory, this is Jon Mayo, and today I'm joined by Lindsey Mayo and the one and only Marcus R. Watt's how are you doing today?

08;06;19;29 - 08;06;09;29

Marcus

I'm doing great. I'm really excited to be here. You know, it's nice to meet you still virtually, you know what I mean. But we spoke on the phone and it was, you know, instantly like a really great connection.

08;06;09;28 - 08;06;07;15

Marcus

So yeah, I'm really excited to be here.

08;06;06;29 - 08;05;55;06

Jon

Yeah, this is good stuff, man. It's know kicking off. We were we're starting to get to warmed up in our warm up conversation. Yeah, we were getting coffee. And there's some funny things, a little bit of radical transparency for everyone, right?

08;05;54;00 - 08;05;43;19

Jon

And you know, we're working through some changes at the group theory, one of which is training our four children how to self manage themselves for two hours while recording.

08;05;43;09 - 08;05;39;20

Lindsey

So meanwhile, success for so.

08;05;39;13 - 08;05;34;19

Marcus

Yeah. Wow. That's beautiful and terrifying also.

08;05;34;18 - 08;05;28;26

Lindsey

Yeah. So if I jump out, that'll be why, for God's sake. But we'll see how that goes.

08;05;28;17 - 08;05;24;03

Marcus

Like, it's like, catch your eye catching a baby with her leg. Like, like, it's not like it's nothing, you know?

08;05;23;29 - 08;05;22;10

Lindsey

Yeah, exactly.

08;05;22;03 - 08;05;15;12

Jon

Like any good parents, we bribe them that if they do not interfere and they self-manage, get them ice cream. So hopefully that, yeah.

08;05;15;01 - 08;05;10;19

Marcus

I mean, listen, that's high level. That's high level. You know, I'm saying stuff, you know?

08;05;10;06 - 08;05;09;19

Lindsey

Yeah, yeah.

08;05;09;03 - 08;05;01;27

Jon

And you're going through a little bit of fun stuff, too. I know that you had to walk past some coffee grounds on your counter this morning. Yes.

08;05;00;17 - 08;04;42;16

Marcus

Yeah. Yeah. So I was so I got up today. It's Saturday, we're recording. I was up pretty late and then I got up me and my buddy. We go work out. After we work out, we go do a little bit of cardio, just shooting some hoops around, which is nice for me because I shredded my knee up

08;04;42;16 - 08;04;30;26

Marcus

two years ago. I haven't been able to touch a ball since. And so, you know, I'm rushing into the house trying to get together quick shower. You know, what am I going to wear on the pie? You know, what am I going to do and clean it up a little bit?

08;04;30;26 - 08;04;18;14

Marcus

And then I just go to make coffee and I put the grinds. I put the beans in the grinder, but the top for some reason, I never do this. I took I open the container and put the top on the counter, I guess so.

08;04;18;14 - 08;04;07;21

Marcus

I put it on and literally I hear it, and I thought it sounded different. And I was like and literally like ten seconds of coffee grinds, just like, explode, you know, my counter and floor. And I was like.

08;04;06;24 - 08;03;53;05

Marcus

So I vacuum the floor in what Jon is making reference to is it was very hard for me to not like stop and or ask for like ten minutes or whatever which you probably would have been OK with, but I don't like doing it because I value your time so much.

08;03;53;05 - 08;03;39;22

Marcus

It's not your fault. That's my fault. But seeing grinds on the counter, it's not 100% clean. It bothered me because it's something that I try to never do. I try to never see something that needs to be done and not do it.

08;03;39;17 - 08;03;21;09

Marcus

Whether it's in my own ecosystem or it's in the parking garage where I live, or it's, you know, something that could be done for later. And that's not because I'm this amazing high performer is because I've learned the things that set me up for success and the things that don't, you know, there was a time when I

08;03;21;09 - 08;03;09;15

Marcus

was more like. Yeah. You know, it's no big, it's no big deal, you know, like don't stress about like life is short. And then I realized that that was turning in. Those were turning into excuses for not being a high level performer.

08;03;09;06 - 08;02;57;29

Marcus

And I remember something my mom used to always say to me, Dresser or so was she's like, You know, why would you wait to do something just in reference to cleaning? She would say, just clean as you go, you do the dishes as you're cleaning.

08;02;57;28 - 08;02;47;18

Marcus

And I never enjoy. I'm like, I'm cooking. I don't want to cook and clean. I'll, you know. And now I really I vacuum my house twice a day like it needs to be cleaned. I clean. It needs to be fixed.

08;02;47;18 - 08;02;33;15

Marcus

I fixed. I don't call anybody, you know, at least until I learn the skill set. So that way I know someone can't pull the wool over my eyes, you know, and I take pride in taking action, you know, and I believe that that rolls over to more of what we're going to speak about today.

08;02;33;15 - 08;02;33;04

Marcus

So.

08;02;31;23 - 08;02;30;16

Lindsey

Yeah, I absolutely agree with you.

08;02;30;14 - 08;02;14;08

Jon

I think it's a drug. It's a direct plug in, right, like something as simple as coffee grounds speaks to the intentionality and the lifestyle mindset that you call today. one of the things that was fun was when Geoff Evans introduced us and you're not on the phone we talked for.

08;02;14;06 - 08;02;10;14

Marcus

I love that guy, man. I really do love that guy.

08;02;09;18 - 08;02;03;05

Jon

He's a good guy. Yeah, I'm hoping he's in Colorado. Sometimes we can get together for. Yeah, he cracks. Yeah.

08;02;02;20 - 08;01;54;25

Marcus

It's not a lot of nothin. He's a he's a, you know, he's just a genuinely good like human being.

08;01;54;12 - 08;01;54;01

You know.

08;01;53;09 - 08;01;43;13

Marcus

Many more people like that, you know? So when he told me, he contacted me, told me about you guys, I was like, Yeah, whatever. Like, call me, text me. Like, It doesn't matter what time like so whatever you know?

08;01;41;16 - 08;01;27;20

Jon

Yeah, absolutely. And what struck me, you and I jumped on and we just started nerding out over the processes and like how you run operations and like, we shared some tools back and forth and it's just like 30 minutes of exchanging ideas.

08;01;27;20 - 08;01;24;06

Jon

And I was like, Well, I think this will be a great conversation for us to jump into.

08;01;23;18 - 08;01;10;02

Marcus

Yeah. And you know, all that comes back to kind of what we were a reference in before. You know, those things aren't because like, this guy is so smart. It's just, I know, I know, I know that there are things that I don't know that I don't know.

08;01;09;19 - 08;00;58;18

Marcus

And now that I know certain things to know and not do is to not care. So once I found these tools, I was like, OK, this is how to do it. There's no other way. If I choose to not do it, then I'm saying that's another quote.

08;00;58;18 - 08;00;49;17

Marcus

That's something my dad used to say to me. Shout out Chris Watts. He's always say when I would get in trouble. Maybe you guys can use this with your kids. You could say, Hey, it's one or two things.

08;00;48;11 - 08;00;35;04

Marcus

Either you you don't know or you don't care. And he's like, and I know that, you know? And that was like it's just like an epiphany, it's like, damn like. I I did know and I chose not to.

08;00;35;01 - 08;00;31;18

Marcus

So what does that say about how I really feel about respecting my father, you know?

08;00;29;12 - 08;00;27;20

Lindsey

This means that we are going to.

08;00;26;21 - 08;00;19;07

Marcus

Take it's powerful, it's like just sit with that, just throw a little pause in there. Yeah. Yeah. As it comes in the best.

08;00;18;03 - 08;00;14;04

Lindsey

Oh, I'm sure that would be absolutely great. I'm always telling them that they planned for late.

08;00;12;09 - 09;59;56;14

Marcus

Yeah, it's not my fault. That's the same thing, it's the same thing in business, they're like, Hey, we need this tomorrow. I'm like, Oh, hey, like, I completely understand that you need that, but that's not my responsibility to account for your poor, your poor lack of planning for.

09;59;56;08 - 09;59;43;13

Marcus

And now you want me. So, so you so you're telling me you want to plan poorly, but you want me to execute highly, get out of here like you're not respecting me as a professional. And if we're working in the same organization, you're not respected in the organization by having a lack of preparation.

09;59;43;05 - 09;59;39;23

Marcus

And I don't think I can. I say, can I curse on here? Is that right, you guys?

09;59;39;18 - 09;59;37;07

Jon

You know, if you need it, let it go. Let it go.

09;59;36;28 - 09;59;24;10

Marcus

Yeah, it's not like a fuck you like you as a person. It's just like the fact that you're disrespecting our ability. I live by a code so, so you know, and we'll get into more of my actual like background or what I do now.

09;59;24;10 - 09;59;13;06

Marcus

But you know, I'm the head of marketing for Generation E-sports, which is the largest class of e-sports platform in the country. And I lead the marketing team in what we do as a as an ethic that we live by.

09;59;13;06 - 09;58;51;06

Marcus

As a mantra is, hey, our our goal is to over deliver for you now over delivery is a fun thing. Some people think that it's in the eye of the beholder. I disagree when you have clear. When you have clear KPIs and you have clear objectives and key results, you know what needs to be done, you know

09;58;51;06 - 09;58;36;09

Marcus

what the roadmap is, you know who needs what? Because people have taken the time to think about it. We're still going to need to be agile. Of course we know this. But when you have that, then you have the ability to always say in every conversation, in every interaction is what I try to do.

09;58;36;02 - 09;58;19;08

Marcus

How can we plus 1%, just plus 1%. We do that every time. Plus 1%. Then imagine where we could be in six months. In six years. You know what I mean with six more companies, you know, reaching six times more people, you know, changing six times more lives.

09;58;19;01 - 09;58;09;02

Marcus

So the everything I do, so when I say fuck you, it's you're not giving us, you're robbing us of the chance to do my best work for you, you know, right?

09;58;06;21 - 09;57;47;05

Jon

Don't ask me to pay for your your problems. All right. Yeah, I don't think so. Yeah, let's dove in instead of jumping around it. So you have good cause to have become incredibly intentional. Understanding a little bit about your past, so so what's caused you to grit defined a little bit for context of why we love the

09;57;47;05 - 09;57;27;18

Jon

word so much. Grit is to be courageous, have brave to execute with bravery and to continue forward with determination despite difficulty, right? So looking at some of your past having conversations with you, I know that there are some things that you had to face that you could have chosen to let beat you and you could have taken

09;57;27;18 - 09;57;12;24

Jon

maybe some conventional routes and instead you took ownership and started shifting things around so that you could craft a better life. What? What happened there and kind of what created the what's that? We the Marcus, what we see today?

09;57;12;08 - 09;57;07;25

Jon

You know what? Why do you care so much about the coffee grounds in your town? What will create that?

09;57;07;15 - 09;56;47;26

Marcus

Yeah, that's a good point. And I'll try to not be like, too long winded, so feel free to like jump in. But I mean. Such a good question. I try to be more direct because I love talking and I love speaking with people, so I try to be more conscious of being direct, but I'm an army brat

09;56;47;25 - 09;56;25;09

Marcus

. first off, you know, thank you to all the Armed Forces Service members, law enforcement. Every everyone. Growing up in the military, you learn that. Everything has a place. Everything has a purpose and everything has a procedure that needs to be followed.

09;56;24;14 - 09;56;03;15

Marcus

one time I was I was riding my bike. Whatever riding around, hanging out, this is in Fort Hood in Killeen. I got home and my dad got home shortly after me had been riding around on base and. When I say based, I mean, like not the housing, like the actual base, like where the soldiers are the trucks

09;56;03;15 - 09;55;49;16

Marcus

and everything like riding through base, right? And my dad said, Hey, where where are you today? And I was like, I was riding my bike. He was like. What were you doing when the return of colors came on today?

09;55;48;19 - 09;55;33;07

Marcus

I'm like, maybe like some. So maybe six or seven times were different, then you could just ride your bike around, you know what I mean, like? Yeah. And he said, What were you doing when they were retiring the colors, if you know what that is.

09;55;33;05 - 09;55;24;24

Marcus

They play the trumpet and you know, they bring the flag down for the day and everyone stops what they're doing. And you hear it.

09;55;23;24 - 09;55;22;12

Lindsey

We taught our boys to do that, too.

09;55;22;04 - 09;55;20;24

Marcus

Yeah, thank you very much, Sammy.

09;55;20;12 - 09;55;18;10

Lindsey

Yeah, we got it.

09;55;17;25 - 09;55;00;20

Marcus

Yeah, exactly. So. I was like, what do you mean? And he said, you didn't, you didn't stop, and I know I know this because when I'm with my dad, that's what we do. You know, I just made me very aware of recognizing where I was and the things that I do.

09;55;00;19 - 09;54;47;14

Marcus

I'm like, OK, well, this this is how it's supposed to be. So that was like the foundation for me. It's from a military, from a military side. You know, I got, you know, growing up all over the world, you meet a lot of tons of different people.

09;54;47;13 - 09;54;34;00

Marcus

I got the opportunity to go to college on a basketball scholarship to get my education and have my parents not pay for it. It was a blessing, it took a lot of hard work, and it would lead me on a path to professional basketball.

09;54;33;04 - 09;54;22;09

Marcus

And the thing is when I got to professional basketball, I really was just leveraging to grow my resume because I know that if I had professional basketball player or professional athlete on my resume, it's just going to open up so many doors like a certificate like whatever.

09;54;22;09 - 09;54;08;24

Marcus

Like I played professionally all over the world. People pay me money because I'm good at doing, I'm good at performing athletically and being that I wanted to be inside of inside of the fitness, health and fitness world. I thought that this would be an extreme upside for me.

09;54;08;14 - 09;53;49;06

Marcus

And it was. It opened up a lot of doors for me and led to my first opportunity, started my first company, you know, training, you know, local leagues. I had players that actually came from Europe, soccer players. I came to train with me, NFL players, MLB number two draft picks like semi-pro football teams that would lead me

09;53;49;06 - 09;53;36;17

Marcus

into management facilities. Then I would open my first facility in 2013, and this is where it starts to get a little iffy. I started really, you know, there were a lot of things that I didn't know, and there were a lot of things that I didn't know that I didn't know, but I didn't know that that was

09;53;36;17 - 09;53;35;17

Marcus

a concept back then.

09;53;35;07 - 09;53;34;29

Hmm.

09;53;33;19 - 09;53;18;12

Marcus

And you know, my business is growing, you know? But at the same time. I wasn't able to to take care of myself, I didn't know I was in this, I didn't, you know, have the finances, even though the business is growing as if I just didn't know.

09;53;18;04 - 09;53;04;20

Marcus

I didn't know that if I didn't have that literacy on like the business side of things. So really fighting to grow myself and learn as much as I can and doing everything on my own, not to say everything when I say everything.

09;53;04;19 - 09;52;51;18

Marcus

There were some really instrumental people in that they know who they are, but you understand what I'm saying. I was the cog that I was the main call and that would lead to a business partner wanting to lead that situation.

09;52;50;15 - 09;52;26;14

Marcus

And long story short. $20,000 is gone. And our business pretty much in the matter of two days, our name, if you across five things, you know, our crossword affiliates work, you already know what happened. Pretty much our affiliate became someone else's down the street who had a struggling business where I had mentored and our entire audience, our

09;52;26;13 - 09;52;10;01

Marcus

entire community of around 150 almost 200 members was completely turned against me because a story was told. You know, and people will always miss. My perspective is important and conversations are important. Isn't that end? And it was a time at which I had started growing myself meant I started reading more.

09;52;10;00 - 09;52;01;13

Marcus

I started paying for courses I couldn't really afford six or seven steps my Tai Lopez Tribes by Seth Godin. I started buying books and giving books away. I started.

09;52;00;13 - 09;51;59;24

You know.

09;51;59;14 - 09;51;45;21

Marcus

four hour work week for everybody. I mean, the start of the start of you just I could go on and on. I just started listening to people who had like a pulse on what was really happening, and we're living the lives that I wanted to live.

09;51;44;25 - 09;51;28;14

Marcus

So when this happened and pretty much my world was swept up underneath me. Meanwhile, at the same time, when his partner said that he wanted to leave, I structured a deal with one of the largest gyms locally who wanted to absorb our brand, bring it on and be a part of theirs because it was so strong.

09;51;28;00 - 09;51;15;16

Marcus

If you know, CrossFit lawless people, I hear this in South Florida, CrossFit LOL. His brand was very well-known, actually like nationally. I was actually offered within less than a year of running my gym and just being the guy that played basketball.

09;51;15;15 - 09;51;04;02

Marcus

But we had a really great performance programing a community. I was actually offered the job to move to Chicago and managed Brick Chicago as they were building it. But I turned it down because I couldn't let my investor down.

09;51;04;02 - 09;50;55;24

Marcus

I couldn't let my community. I just started this journey. I wasn't going to leave and just go do something that was better for me. I'm a tree business the same way I treat the streets and I would never leave.

09;50;55;22 - 09;50;49;04

Marcus

I would never turn my back on you. Not until the job is done, you know, just like our soldiers, you know, until the job is done, you know? So.

09;50;47;23 - 09;50;47;06

Um.

09;50;46;21 - 09;50;29;19

Marcus

It just it was. It turned my world upside down. That deal ended up falling through and pretty much every single member of this gym, who I'd known for three years, some of which couldn't lift a barbell. And now we're level two coaches, some of the highest performers in the in the in the region and.

09;50;27;26 - 09;50;06;26

Marcus

They wouldn't return my calls or my texts. They wouldn't even text me back. And I wanted to kill myself. Hmm. And what I realize is that I put too much of my worth in relationships and not enough in the development of myself and the sufficiency of myself, as both is two things I care about growing myself as

09;50;06;26 - 09;49;48;25

Marcus

a man and growing myself as a professional. So I started doing more of that. You know, I read even more, I, you know, got even more courses and I started to remove myself and. Doing less of the things that were hands on with me in the gym with things, I was already an expert.

09;49;48;24 - 09;49;35;19

Marcus

I mean, I was a massive fitness liaison I gave. Courses at the police academy, I did private classes with the SWAT team, I mean with operators where you can even have them on camera. I'm teaching some of the best of the best how to move properly.

09;49;35;08 - 09;49;20;26

Marcus

I was on an exercise science and kinesiology board at the local university and I did not graduate college and I did not go to school for kinesiology. So it was a really awesome thing for me to see that getting recognized, but at the same time, I was struggling in these other places.

09;49;20;26 - 09;48;59;10

Marcus

So what I started learning was that high performers, they did these certain things, you know, they approached business or something where they approached life a certain way. They approached routine a certain way. And honestly, I just started to see that what these people that we're doing, that we're saying and I just was like, I just started emulating

09;48;59;10 - 09;48;48;16

Marcus

it. And one of the things that stuck out to me was when I heard Andy first actually mention that, and this was way back when his podcast was a lot younger. It's undergone a little bit of a transformation.

09;48;48;15 - 09;48;34;16

Marcus

I don't really care for it now with like it's like almost all Q&A stuff. I like more of his like shorter soundbites and stuff. If you get a chance, I would highly suggest, just like the top business podcast on iTunes and Spotify and has been for ever and and they don't do any sponsorships, which is really cool

09;48;34;16 - 09;48;15;27

Marcus

because he's a powerhouse. But you just mention that just like, you know, attention to detail, the detail and when you're doing your affirmations in the morning with intention, the detail in the visualization of, you know, pulling up in your car to the clear port and opening the door.

09;48;15;27 - 09;48;06;15

Marcus

It's a woodgrain and it's a black handle and it's white trim, you know, I mean, all of these details what the ground feels like, what the all of these these are details of you envisioning as you can bring it to life.

09;48;05;17 - 09;47;57;08

Marcus

I have to have the same detail on every day of my life, if I'm going to think about all the things I want and what I want for my family and, you know, the financial freedom that I want to create, so.

09;47;55;22 - 09;47;44;29

Marcus

I try to do it in everything, you know, in how I walk my dog, I'm intentional. I'm not listening. I'm not talking on the phone when I'm walking my dog or like, you know, on Instagram or something, I'm like, this time for him.

09;47;44;22 - 09;47;33;08

Marcus

You know, I mean, when I'm with my girl, you know what I mean? It's like, Yo, this time for her. Like, Nah, don't call me like, I can't talk. You know, I'm saying, this is her time. You know, when she's done with me, then you can have me, you know, like, No, hey, I can't.

09;47;33;03 - 09;47;21;04

Marcus

Sorry, babe, I, you know. Sorry, bro. Like, this is from this town. This time I'm doing this. Oh, oh, you want me to get in your calendar? Yes, I do. And if you've got a problem with and get the fuck out of here, like, I'm sorry and you don't respect me as a man or a friend.

09;47;21;01 - 09;47;12;14

Marcus

OK, see you later. You know, so it's just that intent. You know that everything kind of. It's all interconnected, you know?

09;47;09;11 - 09;47;02;08

Jon

It is definitely interconnected intentionality is that so you just drop like a nuclear warhead, I think for me.

09;47;01;28 - 09;47;00;20

Lindsey

All right. I know I know this.

09;47;00;20 - 09;46;56;19

Marcus

To be a lot of sound bites right there. We got to mark that timestamp.

09;46;56;18 - 09;46;50;24

Jon

Yeah, yeah. You just like flowed for five minutes. You just let it rain and there's so much to go on.

09;46;50;24 - 09;46;45;05

Marcus

And so if that was only five minutes, then I did good because normally I could go way longer. I just I just didn't.

09;46;45;05 - 09;46;42;08

Jon

Tell anyone ever evidence. I hope it call minutes.

09;46;42;03 - 09;46;41;00

Marcus

Earlier or five minutes.

09;46;38;19 - 09;46;32;25

Jon

There's a lot and there's an uncomfortable question. I can't help but be curious. You mentioned something early on and nothing uncomfortable.

09;46;32;16 - 09;46;32;07

Marcus

Yeah.

09;46;31;22 - 09;46;16;17

Jon

OK. Well, you mentioned something early on. There's a story that was told about you. You've talked about the importance of literacy, the importance of being intentional and how you educate yourself, how you envision things and how you realized that you were spending too much time and what you were excellent at and you wanted to hone some other

09;46;16;17 - 09;45;57;04

Jon

skills. And that because of the story that was told about you, you mourned loss because there was no room for conversation. Right? And I just can't help but but tied it into a small, shameless plug. So part of the role I just launched another series within another podcast called Untraced in the entire premise of entrenched is to

09;45;57;04 - 09;45;38;00

Jon

have intentional, difficult, uncomfortable conversation across differences. And and the goal is to help people break out of that entrenched fixed mindset where they see a white expansions, they see a black guy make assumptions, they see a gay guy, make assumptions.

09;45;38;00 - 09;45;24;23

Jon

Whatever it is, they make these assumptions and then make them the other the enemy when in reality we have resonance of heart, right? We agree on core values. And if we just accept each other, we can stand united.

09;45;24;00 - 09;45;10;11

Jon

So that's the entire premise of on trend. I can't help but think one. I'm curious, what does something like that sound like to you, especially given your life experiences in business and losing all your friends from whatever the story was?

09;45;10;08 - 09;45;08;12

Jon

Yeah. Like that.

09;45;08;02 - 09;45;07;08

Marcus

I just kind of lost.

09;45;06;26 - 09;45;05;12

Jon

I know there's a slight lag. I don't.

09;45;04;27 - 09;44;50;06

Marcus

I don't know. I think it was. Yeah, hold on. If you could. Could you repeat that one more time? I'm so sorry, it was like super weird and a couple, we were like calling me, I'm like, Do not call me like, I'm going to actually just like completely shut my phone off because two people just call me

09;44;49;28 - 09;44;41;01

Marcus

and. I do not want to be disturbed. I wonder, I don't know. But they're like people in my favorite, so when they call, it actually comes through. You know what I mean?

09;44;40;25 - 09;44;35;06

Jon

Yeah, yeah. No, it's funny. Part of our free flight is the airplane mode, as it can do not disturb should work.

09;44;35;05 - 09;44;26;20

Marcus

And yeah, I I completely forgot to put it on airplane. And that's what I yeah, that's what I did it. Yeah, I shouldn't have. I should have known that. Well, yeah, could you repeat the question because you're about to put me on a roll?

09;44;26;19 - 09;44;26;09

Marcus

I know.

09;44;25;22 - 09;44;20;28

Jon

Oh yeah, I was hoping to get you down. Did you hear the context of on trenched? What do you.

09;44;20;28 - 09;44;18;10

Marcus

Need? Yeah, I heard the context. Yep, I heard the context.

09;44;18;01 - 09;44;01;06

Jon

So yeah, given the context, my question was, you know, with a goal like that for conversations, given the the current divisive political life that we're leading and we're a lot of people are trying to hate on our country into opportunity and the ideals it represents one kind of like what is your response to to the hate and

09;44;01;06 - 09;43;53;27

Jon

divisiveness? Right? Because I'm curious. Speaking, I don't I don't see it as a divisive human being. So I'm curious how you.

09;43;53;25 - 09;43;53;20

Marcus

Yeah.

09;43;53;20 - 09;43;40;05

Jon

Yeah, yeah. And then also, what do you think the value of having an essential conversation is, especially given your life experiences losing tons of friends? Is the business not being able to have a conversation? And any any other experiences you have?

09;43;39;12 - 09;43;35;06

Marcus

Yeah, man, that's just going to write that down, actually.

09;43;31;01 - 09;43;28;22

Jon

I decided for send it in just other places, people.

09;43;28;22 - 09;43;25;17

Marcus

Know that was good, yeah, so intentional conversations.

09;43;24;04 - 09;43;23;22

Hmm.

09;43;22;24 - 09;43;00;10

Marcus

It's a decision, you know, having intentional conversations is you being open? Too, not hearing an answer that you want to hear or not looking for and a specific answer if you're having an intentional conversation is sometimes people just most people want to say what they want to say.

09;43;00;09 - 09;42;46;14

Marcus

They want to be heard and they want everyone to move as they see. I was just having this conversation another day, and I was like, Hey, look, I'm telling you this, right? You're not going to be able to grow the business the way that you said, you know why?

09;42;46;10 - 09;42;31;04

Marcus

Because you say that everything works better when you're there. If everything works better when you're there, no, you're always going to have to be there. Well, whose fault is it, really, if everything works better when you're there, if you're the one with the knowledge?

09;42;29;29 - 09;42;15;13

Marcus

It's either communication or it's systems or it's personnel, and it's personnel. It's your job to find that quick and get rid of it. You know, I'm saying if it's communication, do a better job planning, get a coach. If it's systems, find someone that can help you create and implement them.

09;42;12;25 - 09;41;58;20

Marcus

But when I tell people this, I'm like, Hey, listen, I'm just giving you this is me just sharing this conversation with you to have an open dialog. A lot of people don't want that, and that's the problem. See, like, so I'm a couple of things.

09;41;58;20 - 09;41;34;08

Marcus

I'm a black man, right in America. I am vegan also. So. Those are two different things that when conversations around them come up, people get very defensive. You know what I mean? You either understand or you don't. And it ain't my job to teach you.

09;41;33;20 - 09;41;22;21

Marcus

It's not my responsibility to teach. It's not my responsibility to put you in your place. And it's not my responsibility to carry the burden of you choosing to not sit down and educate yourself or hear someone who's trying to have a candid conversation with you.

09;41;19;11 - 09;41;02;13

Marcus

I only talk about a lot of these things when someone asks me, like this, you know, so let's talk about the talk about being a black or brown person in America right now. Right? first off, there are a lot of amazing advocates, and there's a lot of great conversation happening, unfortunately for all the wrong reasons.

09;41;01;29 - 09;40;42;28

Marcus

You know? I think that a lot of times people just they are uncomfortable because they feel like they are going that if there is wrong or there is blame supposedly supposedly pushed in my area, I that's an indictment on me.

09;40;42;04 - 09;40;28;12

Marcus

But it's not. It's just. Either it is or it isn't. Either you don't know or you do know, you know, it's either you understand or you don't understand, you know, either you see from this point of view or you choose to not.

09;40;27;19 - 09;40;14;00

Marcus

You know, before I go in, I say, Jon, listen, this is not working out. I'm going to say, you know. How could I? Let me step back. How could I, what did I do and not do in this situation to get us to this point?

09;40;13;08 - 09;40;02;14

Marcus

Did I really do my due diligence? Did I talk to Lindsey in like, like make her feel like she had an open place to come in and speak to me so we could perform better as a team? Did I let Jon?

09;40;02;01 - 09;39;46;12

Marcus

You know, I'm saying voice his opinions, and when he did, did I take action? You know what I'm saying? Like, did I actually, you know, like, did I? Was I a real leader? I lead my team properly. And then based off of that, I can say.

09;39;45;09 - 09;39;30;20

Marcus

And I'm my I'm going to, you know, intentional person, I'm coming to you and I've already got the objections that you're going to potentially have to meet planned out because I took the time because I care enough to actually take the time and place when I get in, like in relationships like we're going to have a talk

09;39;30;06 - 09;39;19;07

Marcus

like I've got notes, I've got notes and I've got notes so I can. So I can say all of the things that I feel need to be said. And I won't respond out of emotion and I won't respond.

09;39;19;00 - 09;39;05;29

Marcus

Out of spite, and I can make sure to say all the things that I think are important. But a lot of times people don't want to have open conversations. They want to have. They want to what's it called?

09;39;05;25 - 09;38;51;07

Marcus

They just want to make declarative statements. You know, so I just let them. I don't. I don't really care. It doesn't really affect. Does it really affect me? You know, if you don't think that it's that police brutality is a thing, you know, does it really affect me if you don't believe in what's happened to the environment

09;38;51;00 - 09;38;40;05

Marcus

? You know, and how maybe we could do a little bit better if we didn't consume as much meat? No. But then also on the other side, I'm looking at man, you know, there are a lot of people who had businesses and they take care of their families around the meat industry.

09;38;40;04 - 09;38;25;18

Marcus

I don't want them to be affected. Maybe I should be aware of this, too. What does that entail? How would those people feel, man? What if I know somebody that's a what if I had a police officer that was my wife, you know, or my uncle, and he was in this space where people were saying, How would

09;38;25;18 - 09;38;13;27

Marcus

that feel? How would I know? What can I do? How can I just be better in like helping to bridge that gap and not have a personal bias? It's a very hard thing to do. It takes a lot of introspective thinking.

09;38;13;27 - 09;37;59;11

Marcus

In most times people talk without thinking and they don't know what. They don't realize that there are things that they don't know, that they don't know. And if they do know, they choose to not care. All those I got, I worked, all those in one sentence.

09;37;59;11 - 09;37;58;19

Marcus

That's pretty boring.

09;37;57;16 - 09;37;56;03

Lindsey

This guy is an absolutely great.

09;37;55;09 - 09;37;41;12

Jon

Right? He you're and this is. Yup. You got my hands starting to sweat. My palms are sweating. I'm getting so excited. And thank you for going. So like, I'm realizing that I am beating on the drum. Lindsey and I are beating on this drum.

09;37;41;11 - 09;37;33;18

Jon

We are going to war against the divisiveness because we believe that this land is amazing and that the opportunity presented here.

09;37;33;09 - 09;37;32;13

Marcus

100%.

09;37;31;16 - 09;37;28;22

Lindsey

In. And we had two children that were attempting.

09;37;28;13 - 09;37;25;12

Marcus

To relate to. Exactly exactly exactly right.

09;37;25;11 - 09;37;03;27

Lindsey

You know, this is the next generation and I have a I have a responsibility to teach them all of these things to make them think before they speak. Right. I think of all the opposite sides do. In fact, Jonathan and I couple years ago, one of the models of our family is intentional living.

09;37;03;21 - 09;36;48;02

Lindsey

And how do you do that? And how do you teach small humans that because they're just like, well, everything revolves around me, and I'm like, No, it actually doesn't. So, you know, just trying to coercing them to understand these things?

09;36;47;22 - 09;36;37;29

Marcus

Yeah, know. I know that's a that's a challenging thing to do. You know, and I watch people, I mean, I don't have kids, you know, hopefully, you know, I'll be, as you know, so lucky to have a, you know, a wife and family on my own.

09;36;37;19 - 09;36;29;01

Marcus

But I remember when I was a child, this is kind of like a joke, like in the black community. Also, it's like, you know, before you go into a store in white community as well, I'm sure for you going to the store.

09;36;29;01 - 09;36;13;06

Marcus

My mom would just say, Listen. Don't ask for anything like don't look at anything like there's nothing here for you. This is not for you and this is correct. And then also, I remember there was nothing and my mom used to say she was like, It's actually from my grandfather.

09;36;13;06 - 09;36;12;21

Marcus

God rest his.

09;36;12;21 - 09;36;12;11

Soul.

09;36;11;00 - 09;35;55;25

Marcus

Children are to be seen and not heard. And it wasn't that I'm insignificant. It was just that you are not the center of attention. Yes, it's cute. When you do some of that, you do some cartwheels and you say something funny to a stranger and everybody laughs, Ha ha ha ha.

09;35;55;20 - 09;35;42;19

Marcus

But this is not for you. This is not. We're not here for you. You know what I mean? Like, and again, it's that it's that into and that's. Those little humans turn into adults who still have the same mentality.

09;35;42;02 - 09;35;41;25

Marcus

Yeah.

09;35;41;06 - 09;35;18;26

Lindsey

We've learned a lesson well, like when they learn to lesson while they ca
